The Healthy Neighborhoods Project (HNP) staff joined Mayor LaToya Cantrell, the Lower 9th Ward Neighborhood Empowerment Network Association (NENA), other city agencies, and residents for the Hoffman Triangle community cleanup on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020.
Volunteers removed trash and debris from Taylor Playground located at 2600 S. Roman St. The cleanup event comes as a part of CleanUpNOLA, a comprehensive, coordinated initiative combining the efforts of multiple City departments and the community to make New Orleans shine. The program targets 12 major corridors across the City with the four main goals in focus: 1) Roads and neutral grounds are well-kept 2) Residents do their part to keep the City clean 3) Buildings are up to code and 4) Public spaces are free of trash and litter.
HNP staff helped with volunteer registration and acquisition for future events. HNP is a committed partner of the City’s Office of Neighborhood Engagement, and its CleanUpNOLA campaign.
The Healthy Neighborhoods Project is a collaborative effort between Tulane Schools of Public Health and Tropical Medicine and Architecture, the Tulane Mary Amelia Women’s Center, the Institute of Women and Ethnic Studies (IWES), Columbia University, and the City of New Orleans. This neighborhood-based cluster-randomized trial aims to test the impact of cleaning up vacant land and abandoned houses on violence, including family violence.
