Katherine P. Theall

Dr. Theall, MAC’s Director, first joined the Mary Amelia Women’s Center in November of 2010 as Deputy Director, becoming Director in July of 2011. She is an Associate Professor in the Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, Department of Global Community Health and Behavioral Sciences, and holds the Cecile Usdin Professorship in Women’s Health. A native Louisianan, Dr. Theall returned home to teach and practice public health after diverse public health experiences in both federal and academic research institutions. Dr. Theall received her MPH in Epidemiology from Emory University School of Public Health and her PhD in Epidemiology from Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. Before coming to Tulane she worked as an Assistant Professor of Epidemiology at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center School of Public Health. Her research and teaching interests span both practical and theoretical social epidemiology, including women and children’s health; community and social network influences on health outcomes; race and gender inequities; substance use and mental health; social epidemiologic theory and methods. Her primary research is centered on understanding and addressing the multilevel community and biological mechanisms that mediate racial and socioeconomic disparities in women’s health. Specifically, she focuses on the impact of chronic stress, conservation of resources and constrained choices that impact women’s health across the lifespan. She has served as principal or co-principal investigator on numerous research projects as well as service programs that have focused on women’s health, and is on a number of local, national, and international associations concerned with promoting health and social justice. When not at work, she spends her time with her family, including her three children, engaging in hobbies such as adventure racing, volunteering, and enjoying the culture and culinary delights of the city.
