Breastfeeding Welcome Here Project
In partnership with local breastfeeding coalitions across the state, the Louisiana Breastfeeding Coalition (LBC) is working to create supportive environments for breastfeeding mothers and employees through the Breastfeeding Welcome Here project.
The purpose of this project is to create and highlight breastfeeding-friendly establishments for mothers and their families and to provide support (time and space) for the employees of those establishments. This project will help to provide comfortable, shame-free areas such as shopping venues, libraries, and restaurants, so nursing mothers will be able to have the freedom to be away from home longer and support businesses in their communities.
The Louisiana Breastfeeding Coalition invites businesses throughout the state to sign a pledge. By signing the pledge, the business agrees to:
- Provide a comfortable, supportive environment for mothers to nurse in their establishment.
- Ensure that all staff members are aware of the project.
- Display the Breastfeeding Welcome Here signage in a highly visible place.
- Provide lactation accommodations (time and space other than a restroom) for their employees.
For the past two years, the Mary Amelia Center has assisted the Breastfeeding Welcome Here project in reaching out to businesses in the New Orleans area. To see a list of all the businesses who have signed the pledge, please go to this page on the Greater New Orleans Breastfeeding Coalition’s website.
