With governor’s urging, Louisiana Senate panel advances minimum wage, equal pay bills
A state Senate panel advanced legislation Thursday to establish a minimum wage and to pay men and women equally after Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards appeared before the committee in support of both measures.
Voting along party lines, the Senate Committee on Labor and Industrial Relations backed establishing a state minimum wage and setting the amount at $8 in January 2017, to rise to $8.50 per hour in January 2018.
The panel also backed a measure extending an equal pay law governing state workers to also cover private businesses in a state with the nation’s largest pay gap. read more
